Excellent product, great coffee

Submitted by Murphala - 7/8/2019

I used an antique stove-top vacuum pot with a glass filter for years because it's the best cup of coffee ever... this automatic version takes the guesswork out, and also alleviates the problem of the upper bowl getting into a vapor lock and never draining. Really happy I found this! Now I can put the antique on display... My only negative comments are it's messy cleaning the grounds out of the upper chamber because of the narrow opening, and it's a bit pricey compared to competing brands, but I expect this well-made appliance from one of my favorite brands will stand the test of time, just like my fridge and stand mixer!

Great Coffee

Brews coffee well and the clean up is worthwhile. Unfortunately, there is no way to repair the suction once it starts to go in 2-3 years. I expected more.

Submitted by wilklj - 5/16/2019

The coffee is really good and you can taste the difference. And everyone loves watching it brew! I do wish that the carafe was insulated since the burner turns off after the brewing cycle completes.

A modernized classic brewer

Submitted by secondsl - 4/26/2019

Siphon brewing is still the best method to extract the delicate flavors of light roast coffees. Most modern siphon brewers take a lot of work, not this one. It's as close to automatic as it gets. It seems built to last, and is beautiful next to the matching KitchenAid Kettle.

Great concept that locks in the flavor

Submitted by G.Austin - 3/3/2019

The coffee maker was given to me for Father's Day 2018. The coffee maker locks in the flavor, the machine is easy to clean. Issue is that the plastic rim warped and the machine no longer works properly. The pot also doesn't keep the coffee hot.

Redesign the handles!

Submitted by ChuckB - 2/27/2019

I love this coffee maker! I love the coffee it makes. I love watching it brew the coffee. However, when I read about the handles on other people's machines cracking and breaking, I took a close look at mine and found that it too had cracked just above the power switch. Clearly the handle cannot withstand the heat it is subjected to. My unit is only 6 months old. Hey KitchenAid, did you not cycle this device 1,000 times to see if it would survive three years of use? Frankly, I expect a $300 coffee maker to LAST a long time. This stops KA from being my go-to brand. Yes KA is sending a replacement, but how long will it last? For the price of this machine I could buy ten cheap drip coffee makers, or go back to a nice French press that will last for 20 years and also make great coffee. Great concept and design, but some poor material choices produced a failure. I used to recommend it to all my guests, but I no longer can.

Makes GREAT coffee but needs a few features

Submitted by CoFlyBoy - 1/24/2019

I have this coffee maker for a week now. The pros: Relatively easy to use, makes great coffee, cool watching the brew process, it seems well-made, cool design looks nice on the counter. Did I mention it makes excellent tasting coffee? The cons: Desperately needs a 'keep warm' function. If you don't drink coffee soon the coffee will cool quickly, I suggest buying a high-quality Thermos to pour hot coffee into after brewing, especially if you are alone. Takes considerable more effort to clean than simply tossing a filter onto the compost heap, not a big deal, though. We specifically bought this coffee maker hoping to avoid hot water contact to plastic and are disappointed to discover the filter handle is made of plastic. I urge KitchenAid to develop a stainless-steel filter handle and you will attract a considerable audience in an upcoming niche market of plastic-free coffee making. With a warmer and a stainless filter handle this would be a 5-star rating, consider it a perfect coffee maker and certainly come with a very high recommendation. Note that it makes excellent tasting coffee.

The siphon brewer makes delicious coffee. The brewing cycle is fun to watch and it's fast. It doesn't have a warmer so making coffee for multiple people is best. If it's just for one you must reheat each cup.

Love the coffee maker but too fragile

Submitted by lindybach - 12/20/2018

I've had this brewer for 3 years now and love the taste of the coffee but I've just had to buy my 4th brewing carafe. You have no choice but to manhandle the brewing carafe while cleaning out the gounds and even the slightest wrong move causes breakage. At $80 a pop, no matter how much I love the coffee it makes, I'm not going to purchase another one.

So disappointed!

Submitted by Kenika2000 - 10/26/2018

I purchased the Siphon Coffee Brewer just over a year ago, of curse right outside the warranty period. It held up for about a year. Within the last month, the rubberized top of the carafe maintained a hole that affected the brew and the siphon, the light went out, but the heating element still works. After daily use, the tightening of the siphon to the carafe caused wear and tear. You would expect this to hold up as it is a Kitchen Aid product and only a little over a year old. Now, trying to reach someone at Customer Service, I held on the telephone for 45 minutes, the representative finally answered asked me how she could help, then hung up on me. So, I went to the KitchenAid website, and started the live chat process. After 2 chat sessions, I was told I was out of warranty, nothing they could do and referred me to the part department and the small appliances order line at 800-541-6390. So, I called them, the carafe is on back order and not available for 8 weeks. Of course, right through the holidays. I give up on this product and on Kitchen Aid. We have a family of Kitchen Aid products. I dread the day that the refrigerator or other appliances go out!!

great coffee didn't last

Submitted by kris87 - 9/28/2018

I brought this coffee pot 13 months ago...I was very excited and it made great coffee. A little disappointed that they could not add a feature to keep coffee warm if you didn't drink the whole pot immediately, but could overlook that because the coffee was very good. When the pot was about 11 months old it started having a short I didn't realize it at first because if you touched the pot it would brew but shortly after that it stopped working. I think it should last longer than 12 months considering it was $200.00.

Best Coffee Ever But No Continuos Heating Element

Submitted by Xavio3 - 9/28/2018

I love the coffee this fancy Siphon Coffee Brewer makes...however, why did Kitchen Aid miss building it better with a heating element to keep coffee hot as I will drink more than one cup of coffee...but, while at seat at my dining table or drink my coffee at my desk at home, then I return back to the kitchen to pour another cup, the coffee is barely warn...that is one drawback about having bought this machine since the company doesn't tell you anywhere on the box or on the show in which I found and saw this coffee maker on QVC show with In The Kitchen with David, I totally overlooked or might have missed them talking about how the coffee doesn't last hot in its carafe because when they make everything look so awesome, I just got really excited and just ordered it....well, after several months of having this brewer, the coffee doesn't taste as great as when I first bought it...also, it used to make a "whooshing" sound when it siphoned the coffee back down to the carafe, it no longer makes that noise which I just loved listening to that sound and it was a great topic talked about at my dining table with friends and family...they all thought it was something out of a showcase and always got a lot of compliments. I am just hoping that I don't start having all the issues other consumers have voiced in their reviews. If Kitchen Aid company reads this, I would appreciate if I could get some feedback on why my coffee doesn't laste as good as the first coffee brewed and why it doesn't make the sound anymore, cause its like something isn't working quite right! And yes, this coffee makers are not cheap so, I wish that Kitchen Aid would do a recall on all these and compensate customers with some new ones and hopefully they have fixed all the flaws to make customer satisfaction better, and thats what everyone deserves since we have paid a lot of money for these machines.

THE BEST COFFEE EVER!

Submitted by BCJ51 - 9/2/2018

We bought this in March 2018 as a birthday present to ourselves. In my past I was not much of a coffee drinker, maybe 1 or 2 cups a week. I could take it or leave it, however on the other hand my husband loves his coffee in the morning! Now we have about 12 different kinds of coffee and I drink 1 or 2 cups each morning and decaf at night. All the bitterness is gone and the full flavor comes through to delight your taste buds. The only problem we now is that this morning we discovered that the coffee pot handle has broken at the bottom. Not sure what the warranty is good for and now we need a replacement.

Great coffee until the magnet cracked

Submitted by Longtime kitchenaid fan - 8/27/2018

I bought this 2.5 years ago we loved the coffee and it was a conversation piece. This brew method took out the coffee bitterness but once the magnet on the rim cracked the coffee maker was useless. It would no longer make the required deal to create the vacuum. I do not recommend this coffeemaker for daily use. Clean up was a mess.

Well Designed

Submitted by jbakeronathan - 8/21/2018

Around 23 years ago I bought the Bodum Santos siphon coffee maker. Over that time it became stained, the strainer filter broke which required a Rube Goldberg fix to hold it in place. A few months ago the caraffe finally developed a crack at the top that allowed air to leak into the system. So, I began a hunt for its replacement. The KitchenAid Siphon 40 oz. Coffee Brewer is a worthy replacement and I bought one five weeks ago. I'm writing this review to express my experience relating to some of the negative opinions given by others. Difficulty in cleaning…not so much, imho. Yes, the grounds can stick and that requires wiping them to remove them. Yes, the construction is glass, requiring care in handling. But, no staining, a big plus as the unit continues to look brand new after cleaning. Yes, the caraffe construction has a flat lip inside that requires some contortion and gentle shaking to get the last drops out, but, a little ingenuity and three or four rinses accomplishes the job. And, yes, the opening is too small to get my small hand inside to wipe dry. But, I continually make coffee and let it sit in the caraffe, so..so what. I found that I needed the addition of the cloth filter after my first two attempts at using only the metal filter and having coffee ground sludge in the caraffe. Using the cloth keeps the fine grounds from entering the caraffe. I have the Bodun Electric Burr Bistro grinder and have the setting on the second dot from the finest grind setting. I leave the cloth attached to the filter and clean it under the faucet stream. I've used the filter for about a month and it seems to be holding up well. It is stained, but, again, so what. I applaud the ingenuity of the designers of this coffee maker. The filter wand locks in place with a twist and can accommodate the thickness of the wrap-around cloth filter. The upper unit locks in place to the caraffe with a twist aided by magnetic attraction. There is nothing that will loosen and get out of place while the unit is doing its thing. Brilliant! Oh, yes, after the coffee has been made and the upper unit is removed and placed in the well-designed stand, the cover for the caraffe twists into alignment and is held in place. It guides a stream of coffee into your cup without having a drip or two leave the rim and stain the front of the caraffe. Again, brilliant! I've always microwaved cold coffee, so the caraffe not having a warm setting is of no consequence.

Poor Quality, great tasteing coffee

Submitted by Ann W - 8/3/2018

Do Not Buy This Coffee Maker. The Handle Broke!! I purchased this coffee maker one year and a few days ago. I loved it. Although it is a bit difficult to clean, it was worth the trouble. It made the best coffee I have ever had Within a couple of months the on/off light indicator stopped working but the coffee maker worked fine. Two days ago, I noticed the handle pulling away from the glass pot. It is literally coming off starting at the top of the handle. It is separated about 1/4 inch at the top and it gets less and less Now its only connected to the coffee pot by about 1 inch. We do not want a replacement because based on previous reviews, this a design flaw and has not been addressed properly. If you are considering purchasing one, save your time and the money. The cheapest Mr. Coffee will last longer but will not make the same quality. Oh yes, I just purchased nearly $100.00 of the cloth filters. So add that to my cost. Grrrrrr

Great... until they broke.

Submitted by Mikela - 7/31/2018

I bought one for home and loved it so much I bought a second for my summer home. They both broke. On one, the handle just crumbled. I still use it by holding the metal piece that the handle was attached to. On the other, the handle is fine but the plastic pieces that form the seal on the upper chamber and the carafe have both split in several spots and can no longer hold the vacuum. Effectively turning the unit into a drip coffee maker that makes nasty coffee. But for the months that they lasted, it was the best coffee I've ever had!!

Uneven boiling

Submitted by WHENG - 6/5/2018

I bought 2 months ago and have not used it until this week as I want to use it in our new place. Now, when I first used it I've notice it did not boil evenly. I follow instruction and our coffee taste like nothing literally taste almost like water. Also, we are using dark roast starbucks coffee. So, we thought this machine is not working the way it supposed to be. The next day tried again and it's the same result of coffee taste, 3rd day we tried stirring the coffee while it's boiling and it did makes a good coffee. Finally, we have a good coffee. This brewer is so expensive and still making us to work. Im not sure if there is a defect on workmanship or this is how it works if yes. Then it's not worth to have this brewer. I wish I can take my money back or maybe kitchenaid can do something and fix it.

Broken handle

Submitted by sixpack9 - 6/5/2018

My Gourmia coffee maker stopped working when my wife dropped the top globe and broke it. Went looking for a replacement and chose this KitchenAid Siphon maker. It has been a little over one year and today the handle cracked at the top and bottom where it attached to the globe. This short life is not acceptable for the expensive siphon coffee maker. I have contacted Kitchen Aid and wait for a reply. I will let you know how it works out! E C

Good coffee, poor quality

Submitted by Noyade - 6/3/2018

I have had the siphon for about 9 months. It has been maintained well, never machine washed and about a month ago, the handle just started disintegrating. I expect that a 250$ coffee maker lasts longer than a 19$ Mr coffee, but alas I have read a few other reviews with the exact same quote, so it seems like a design flaw.

Bought two, both broke. Poor construction.

Submitted by Mikely - 4/12/2018

The upper pot broke on both units but in different ways. On one, the plastic handle just fell apart after a few months - not repairable. On the other, the bottom that creates the seal started to crack and can no longer hold a vacuum so the coffee never makes it all the way down. Never used dishwasher, used with care every time. Bottom half on both are solid. It's just the stupid chambers seem to be made by another company altogether. Won't buy a third.

Not worth the money

Submitted by PatrickD - 4/10/2018

At first we loved the coffee this maker brewed. But after 18 months the magnetic seal corroded and now it doesn't brew correctly. KitchAid said "Sorry, it has been longer than a year." I would think a $250 coffee maker would last longer than 18 months.

Siphon Coffee Makeer Review

Submitted by Midlife49 - 4/10/2018

When I was a youngster my parents had one of these...A great cup of coffee. Very glad to see one of these again. Cleaning tools need improvement. I use a kitchen aid silicone spoon. Would be good to have 12 cups

I love the coffee this brewer makes

Submitted by Merbird - 4/7/2018

I have owned this machine for 20 months and I would be happy to keep using it for 20 years more. It is fast, the coffee is smooth with no bitter taste. I am a big enough coffee snob to even roast my own beans and I have used everything for the super automatic expresso machines to the AeroPress. Nothing made a cup of coffee taste as good as this does. Thanks KitchenAid. Oh, and I have bought 2 more to give to friends and they love it too.

i've had 3 siphon brewers, bodem pebo, gourmia digital and this one. i was using the pebo when i ran across the kitchen aid and grabbed it immediately because of the automation. not only is it extremely durable (if you have had any other siphon brewer, you do know how fragile they are) it is totally automated. fill, turn it on and walk away...in 10 minutes you have a quality pot of coffee. no babysitting thru the whole process. only complaint, it will not be totally ground free, even with the cloth filter and it does cool down fast.

Could use a little tweeking

Submitted by ABbyL - 3/6/2018

The Siphon Coffee Brewer makes an excellent cup of coffee, it is simple to use, does not need to be carefully babysat and it works very well. It is nice the the siphon tube is stainless steel, my old one was glass and broke all the time and I ended up spending the same as what this cost to keep replacing the top carafe. BUT I do have 4 things that could be improved: 1) I have noticed that the grounds always get to the bottom carafe with or with out the extra filter. 2) I wish it had multiple brewing times or a warming only function because I like strong coffee and have to send the coffee up to be brewed again. 3) It is really hard to get the last few drops out of the bottom carafe because of the shape of the bowl vs the spout. 4) Sometimes the lid lets coffee water spit out the top because you can not close the spout part of the lid and it can make a HUGE mess. I hope this is helpful to anyone looking at their options in buying a coffee siphon brewer. I am really happy over all with my purchase, just a few things that could be improved. Thanks

Only made great coffee for a few months

Submitted by BeccaS - 2/18/2018

Just to give you an idea, I am a coffee snob. I have tried so many different coffee makers and espresso machines in the past thirty years, always looking for the very best. I grind my own beans and strive for the best cup every day. That being said, I was over the moon when I first got this coffee maker as it made the very best coffee I've ever had at home. I realize it's hard to clean and you have to pour the coffee in a thermal carafe immediately after brewing to keep it hot, but it was so worth it to me for that delicious brew. Then after about 2 months, the coffee started tasting burned and bitter. I de-calcified the carafe even though I've always washed it thoroughly after every use, and I put in a new cloth filter. I always remove the carafe the second the coffee siphons back down into the carafe to make sure it doesn't boil. Everything I've done, the coffee still tastes horrible. I think the vacuum seal is not as strong as it used to be because the coffee used to have a thick head of crema when siphoning back into the carafe, and now there is none. I believe the crema was what made the coffee taste so amazing, but now without getting that crema, the coffee is just awful. Seriously so bad that I have to pour the whole pot down the sink. When you spend $250 on a coffee maker you expect it to last a long time, not just a few months. It's now just sitting in my cupboard collecting dust and reminding me what a foolish purchase I made. Sigh. I wish I could return it as I have the original box and everything, but I'm sure I tossed the receipt after the first month when I was in love with it. If you do purchase this, hold on to your receipt for several months for when this eventually starts happening to your coffee maker.

Old ain't bad, in fact it is very very good

Submitted by Tyron - 2/6/2018

Turns out your grandmother forgot more than you ever learned about brewing coffee at home. Vacuum coffee brewing is a gift from the coffee brewing gods that KitchenAid has taken and brought to a state of euphoric perfection. Ignore all those who would suggest that you bypass the cloth filter and use it as directed. What you will get for you minimal pains is a cup of coffee that actually tastes like the beans you used. This coffee maker is built very well and is easy to use and clean. Buy good beans and enjoy. A word to the wise; a lighter roast is where this extraction method shines.

Garbage

The brewer is made of very cheap materials. The plastic handle continues to disintegrate.

Submitted by quietrockfarm - 12/23/2017

First we broke the top part. Kitchenaide replaced it for free! Yay! But then we broke the bottom part. I give up. If anyone wants a spare top part and stand, look on FreeCycle in Frederick MD. Cleaning is not very easy. Be sure to use the stand.

Fabulous coffee!

Submitted by MikeWatza - 12/7/2017

Set it up this morning, sans instructions, and had the finest coffee I have ever tasted. That unavoidable tinge of bitterness is gone. Like smoking a Cuban Cigar. Pure silk. And very easy to clean. Thank you.

Needs new handle design - second carafe in 4 weeks

Submitted by wukas3 - 11/29/2017

I dont know how to rate this product- the coffee is great but the workmanship needs to be improved. We have had 4 weeks- so far 2 pots have had the handle come apart. Leaving you to hold a metal brace- it is also made for small hands. KA I want to keep enjoying my cofee- please redesign the handle.

Its literally falling apart before our eyes

Submitted by Ayrneus - 11/20/2017

Loved it for the first 3 months but now you can tell its on its death bed. It started when the handle cover just decided to break off leaving you with exposed metal to grip. Now the seal of the filter stopper is going. IT doesn't siphon correctly and now every moring, it creates a whistle that sounds like a train going through my house. The mess is a thing too but you sort of just come to accept that on day 4.

Excellent coffe

Submitted by Jeffixxx - 10/16/2017

Best coffee I've made and it looks so good. But it is a bugger to clean without the grounds going down the sink, and there is no keep warm facilty, which, at 159, is a serious omission
